A seaside town on the Isle of Thanet, in northeastern Kent, Broadstairs was settled as early as the Roman occupation. The village was initially a fishing port, but later became prosperous a centre of shipbuilding.
The Dickens Connection The town has strong connections with author Charles Dickens, who was a regular visitor, and there is an annual Dickens festival. Bleak House Rising above the harbour is the bulk of Bleak House, renamed because its owner believed it to be the one used by Dickens in his tale of the same name. Crampton Tower Museum Located in a flint tower beside Broadstairs rail station, this small museum looks at the life and career of Thomas Crampton, a designer of railroads, locomotives, water works, and underground telegraph cables.

Daily folk shows are held during Folk Week that takes place annually in August. Just a little further along from the Bandstand is the Broadstairs Information Kiosk. Run by volunteers from April to the end of October. At any time of the year though, this is a good starting point for the Broadstairs Town Trail.

Now an area of Broadstairs it was once the more important of the two settlements. This is a 4 mile inland walk between Broadstairs and Margate. It starts in Broadstairs at the Dickens House Museum. It then largely follows an ancient footpath. The walk ends in Margate at the Turner Contemporary Gallery.
