Why ebay private listing
To set up a private auction, you must enable the appropriate option during the creation of your listing. Click "Sell" at the top of any eBay page to open the "Sell on eBay" page and enter the name of the item you want to list.
Click "Create Your Listing" in the following screen. Click "Add or Remove Options," located to the right of "Choose how you'd like to sell your item" near the bottom of the page. Click the box next to "Allow buyers to remain anonymous to other eBay users" under Private Listing and click "Save.
Why would I compete with someone who constantly bids irresponsibly, with no serious intention to buy, and then retracts these bids? So, yeah, it makes sense to know whom you are bidding against. It is not necessarily a scam. It is somewhat hard for me to understand why they are doing this as the real identities remain hidden at all times anyways.
With that being said, I have to note that private listings are indeed a factor that should raise a red flag. According to my personal experience, private listings are mainly used by dishonest sellers. Usernames are hidden from other members viewing the listing and can only be seen by the seller.
This is because buyers may not want purchases of high-value items revealed or may want to keep health-related information confidential. You can create private listings using the business tool. When creating your listing - opens in new window or tab , simply select Allow buyers to remain anonymous to other eBay users in the Selling details section. Tue Feb 21 Yes Ebay changed this a while back.
It has been a couple years at least, but I don't remember how long it has been for sure. While other bidders can't see the bidding IDs, the seller for that specific listing can. And you are correct, Ebay said it was to protect the privacy of the buyers. As a buyer I'm glad ebay does this as its no ones business what I'm buying. As a seller if you think there are shills on my auctions then report it to Ebay. Crooks love this feature, which has been around for a LONG time.
Every time I see fake art on eBay, the seller uses ''private listing - bidders' identities protected. I'm inclined to believe that this change a couple of years ago was more about higher FVFs than it was about protecting the identity of buyers. Ebafia protects no one unless it's in their best interests. Wed Feb 22 A simple and fair change would be for eBay to leave it to the buyer to decide whether to show full user ID. Ebay by default makes collections public whereas they should allow the user to decide whether private or public is the default.
Privacy is not a concern for eBay; profit is. I don't like it either cause there's no transparency. In an auction there's has to be openness in order to believe no fraud is happening and here only ebay and the seller knows whats happening. We all know ebay doesn't care or is always missing in action.
